Come Fly With Me | Part IV | Flightless Birds

What an anomaly. But you mustn't cry for them; they are amazing creatures, and they've Learned to Persevere.

Perseverance. Where have we heard that word before?

Here's a peek into my brain: I used to feel bad for Flightless Birds. I wondered, "Do Ostriches ever spread their Wings, look up and feel a Longing? Why have Wings if they can't take to the sky?"

Here's what I've Learned: Wings do not guarantee Flight; & Flight is not the exclusive use for Wings. You see, Flightless Birds evolved not to Fly. Flying no longer served them. They had other traits that were more useful for survival given their environmental circumstances, and they embraced it, teaching the generations after them how to adapt.

You've probably heard of some of the members of Ratite & Co. This Company of Flightless Birds was founded due to a common lack of bodily equipment necessary to anchor their Wing muscles to their sternums. Rather than letting this hold them back from their full potential, Ratite & Co. evolved to break Global Records and win the hearts of bird-lovers world-wide. Let's take a look at our Board of Directors:

Ostrich

  • Perpetual Employee of the Month, holding current record for Largest Bird in the World and Fastest Flightless Bird, with peak performances of up to 350lbs and 43mph, respectively.

Emu

  • Currently on Probation for Absence Without Leave and Attitude in the Workplace (If you're from my town, you may remember the infamous Emu on the Loose who ran from the authorities for two years. It was quite the scandal. PR is still trying to recover).
Rhea

  • Director of Creative Marketing, Rhea led the wildly successful ad campaign for Flightless Birds, Daughter of Earth and Sky, drawing from her background in Greek Mythology.
Cassowary
  • After some trouble with Human Resources and multiple Customer Service complaints, Cassowary was named the Most Dangerous Bird in the World and was moved to a private office in IT. He prefers to work alone.
Kiwi
  • The Smallest Bird in the Company, weighing as little as 3 pounds, she is the most efficient member of the Egg Dept. with the highest egg-to-body-weight ratio of any Bird, averaging 15% (compared to Ostrich's 2%, despite it being the largest bird egg by size).

Do you think these Birds would have been as successful in their Fields (no pun intended, that time) if they had spent their time Praying for the ability to Fly instead of Offering God their Wings on the ground?

Jesus made this Promise in the last Chapter of His Sermon on the Mount:

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened." (Matthew 7:7-8, NIV)

James echoed this in his Letter to the Church, urging Jesus' followers to be doers of the Word, and not just hearers:

"...You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives..." (James 4:2-3, NIV)

Are you praying for Flight, or are you Offering God your Wings?

The Hidden Gospel

In the third grade, I proudly toted my custom-made plywood History Fair try-fold display, courtesy of my Loving Father, into the school cafeteria, my head held high among my classmates with their flimsy foam boards. I had spent weeks creating this piece of Art titled, "Indian Communication."*  The topic of the History Fair was "Communication Throughout History." The majority of my classmates chose one of two topics to research: the invention of the telephone or Morse Code. So basic. I, of course, had to be different. The idea came from my Mom, who knew my fascination with Native American Art as a young girl growing up in the heart of Utah.  Equipped with a hot glue gun and plenty of paint, I set to work carefully stacking and attaching flat stones to my board to visually represent trail cairns - a way that travelers would communicate to those who would come after them that they were on the right path.  Smoke signals were crafted with cotton balls, naturally; but the...

Peter Pan & Christian Maturity | Part I | Fairy Dust

Welcome back to The Hidden Gospel. Before we explore some of the Beautiful Symbolism in the Characters living in Neverland, we need to get there.  How?  We Fly, of course!  "I say, how do you do it?" asked John, rubbing his knee. He was quite a practical boy. "You just think Lovely and Wonderful thoughts," Peter explained, "and they lift you up in the air." He showed them again. "You're so nippy at it," John said, "couldn't you do it very slowly once?" Peter did it both slowly and quickly. "I've got it now, Wendy!" cried John, but soon he found he had not. Not one of them could fly an inch, though even Michael was in words of two syllables, and Peter did not know A from Z.  Of course Peter had been trifling with them, for no one can fly unless the Fairy Dust has been blown on him. Fortunately, as we have mentioned, one of his hands was messy with it, and he blew some on each of them, with the most superb results. I...

Peter Pan & Christian Maturity | Part IV | Wendy's Story

And now, to Rescue Wendy!  Looking over Wendy's List, she seems a bit... Ordinary. So, naturally, I wasn't immediately drawn to her. There were much more exiting Characters to explore first. In case you've Forgotten, (Children tend to do that), let's take another look at her List: Name: Wendy Moira Angela, Darling  Mother to the Lost Boys | "Just a Mom", maybe? Or, Longing to become a Mother? Grieving a Lost Child? Trying to Rescue a Lost Child? Or, perhaps...Childless with no one to tell Stories to? Storyteller |  Life Expectancy: Normal. |  What is Normal?  Is that another grey hair? My Arthritis is flaring up again.  What will the test results say?  Tick-tock-tick-tock.  I think we can all find a little Wendy in each of us. Wendy always knew she would Eventually Grow Up. The way she she knew was this:  One day when she was two years old she was playing in a Garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her Mother. I sup...
